Attitudes to the ‘Solidarity Levy’

As a result of the protest by adults with disabilities and their parent-carers, the government has come up with a plan for an additional 4% tax to be paid by the 25,000 top earners in Poland, from which the money would go to finance certain services for people with disabilities.
Before the government had presented the details of this scheme, CBOS asked about people’s attitude in principle to this kind of approach. Over half the people questioned (57%) were in favour of taxing not more than the top 5% of earners, while almost a third (31%) were against this.
Attitudes to the ‘solidarity levy’ depended, above all, on the party political preferences and financial situation of respondents. The introduction of such an additional tax was more frequently supported by potential voters for Law and Justice (and the small parties associated with it) and from households with smaller per capita incomes.
