Polish Patriotism

This year Poland celebrates regaining independence a hundred years ago. This centenary seemed a good time to revisit the subject of patriotism and pride in being Polish. In the survey people were asked whether they felt pride in their nationality and the circumstances in which they felt this. A decided majority felt pride in their nationality ‘quite often’ (71%), with a quarter (26%) saying that they felt this way ‘very often’.

People who felt pride in their nationality, even if this did not happen very often, were then asked about the situations in which this feeling arose. Most frequently national pride was connected with Polish sporting successes (24% of respondents said this was when they felt proud). A significant percentage of people said they did not need a particular reason to make them feel proud of their identity because they felt proud all the time (18%). One in ten reported feeling pride in Polish history and the heroism of Polish people (10%). Other circumstances that made people proud of their identity were trips abroad (9%) or commemorative events during national holidays and other uses of national symbols (8%).
