Online Political Activity prior to the Presidential Election

This year’s presidential election, like the previous one in 2015, has been a considerable focus of public attention, as made clear by the heightened interest of Poles in the election campaign. In this respect there has been a particular increase in the role of the internet, with online political activity in the run-up to the election reaching record proportions. Not only were more people making use of the internet as a source of information, but there was considerable intensification of political discussion on online forums, blogs and social media.

This ‘Current Events and Problems’ survey (362) was conducted using a mixed-mode procedure on a representative sample of named adult residents of Poland, randomly selected from the National Identity Number (PESEL) register.
Respondents independently selected one of the following methods:
– Computer Assisted Personal Interview (CAPI);
– Computer Assisted Telephone Interview (CATI), respondents receiving researchers’ telephone numbers in an introductory letter from CBOS;
– Computer Assisted Web Interview (CAWI), where respondents filled in the online questionnaire independently, gaining access by means of a login and password provided in an introductory letter from CBOS.
In all three cases the questionnaire had the same structure and comprised the same questions. The survey was carried out between 18 and 27 August 2020 inclusive on a sample of 1149 people (72.7% using the CAPI method, 17.0% CATI and 10.4% CAWI).
The 2015 data come from the ‘Current Events and Problems’ survey (301) conducted face to face and computer-assisted (CAPI), carried out between 11 and 17 June 2015 on a representative random sample of 1011 adult residents of Poland.
