Record Support for Polish Membership of NATO
| Support for NATO membership is currently at the highest point since CBOS records began. Poland’s membership is supported by 94% of Polish people, with 75% being strongly in favour. A mere 0.5% of respondents are against, while 3% don’t care.

| Since 1999 a decided majority of Polish people has been in favour of Poland’s membership of NATO. However, Russian aggression towards its neighbour is the factor that most clearly intensifies support for Polish membership of the alliance. It is worth noting the significant jump in support from April 2014. After the ‘referendum’ in Crimea and subsequent annexation by the Russian Federation, the percentage of Poles in favour of Polish membership of NATO leapt by 19 points in comparison to February’s pre-annexation result, with a concurrent drop of 16 points in the percentage saying they don’t care. This increase in support was noted even before the attacks of pro-Russian separatists on the east of Ukraine and the escalation of violence in the region. This year, after the armed invasion of Ukraine by Russia on 24 February, pro-NATO attitudes have spread throughout Poland like never before, no doubt reinforced by the presence on Polish territory of troops from other member countries.

| This ‘Current Events and Problems’ survey (383) was conducted using a mixed-mode procedure on a representative sample of named adult residents of Poland, randomly selected from the National Identity Number (PESEL) register.
| Respondents independently selected one of the following methods:
– Computer Assisted Personal Interview (CAPI);
– Computer Assisted Telephone Interview (CATI), respondents receiving researchers’ telephone numbers in an introductory letter from CBOS;
– Computer Assisted Web Interview (CAWI), where respondents filled in the online questionnaire independently, gaining access by means of a login and password provided in an introductory letter from CBOS
| In all three cases the questionnaire had the same structure and comprised the same questions. The survey was carried out between 28 February – 10 March 2022 inclusive on a sample of 1078 people (56% using the CAPI method, 28.4% CATI and 15.6% CAWI).
| CBOS has been conducting statutory research using the above procedure since May 2020, stating in each case the percentage of personal, telephone and internet interviews.
